Buriram set up SF fight with Pathum
Thai League champions Buriram United progressed to the semi-finals of the Asean Club Championship (Shopee Cup) as Group B runners-up after a 1-0 win over Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur City FC at Chang Arena on Thursday night.
Lucas Crispim's goal eight minutes before the interval was enough for the Thunder Castle to secure the victory although they missed a number of chances in the second half.
The victory has lined up an all-Thai semi-final clash against Thai League 1 rivals BG Pathum United in April.
In the other two group matches, the Philippines' Kaya FC picked up their first win of the tournament, defeating Singapore's Lion City Sailors 2-0, while group winners Cong An Hanoi of Vietnam claimed their fifth successive win by beating Borneo FC of Indonesia 3-2.
Cong An will face PSM Makassar of Indonesia in the other semi-final tie.
The first leg of the semi-finals will be played on April 2 and the second leg will take place on April 30.
"We are very happy to have qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament. We knew that the opponents would be very defensive but we controlled the game and handled their counter-attack well," said Buriram coach Osmar Loss Vieira.
On the prospect of facing BG Pathum in the semi-finals, Osmar Loss added, "It will be a big match between two big teams from Thailand. The fans will witness an exciting football game and I hope that Buriram United will qualify for the final of the competition."
