Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Pornpawee Chochuwong moved into the quarter-finals of the US$2 million BWF China Open in Changzhou yesterday.
Olympic silver medallist Kunlavut, playing in his first tournament after Paris 2024, cruised past Brian Yang of Canada 21-18, 21-9 in the men's singles last 16.
The Thai eighth seed will play Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia for a place in the semi-finals of the World Tour Super 1000 event at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium.
Ginting stunned top seed Shi Yuqi of China 21-11, 21-8 in just 28 minutes.
Meanwhile women's singles player Pornpawee needed three games to overcome Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark 21-13, 20-22, 21-14 in 65 minutes.
Pornpawee, who reached the semi-finals at the Hong Kong Open last week, will play seventh seed Aya Ohori of Japan in the quarter-finals.
Kunlavut and Pornpawee are the only remaining Thai players in the Super 100 tournament after Busanan Ongbamrungphan and mixed doubles pair Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran lost their second round matches yesterday.
Women's singles hope Busanan crashed out after losing to Yeo Jia Min of Singapore 16-21, 17-21.
Supak and Supissara lost to Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai of Malaysia 21-16, 21-12.
Women's fourth seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan battled past Chiu Pin-chian of Taiwan 17-21, 21-10, 21-13; third seed Wang Zhiyi of China beat compatriot Zhang Yiman 29-27, 21-11 while Malvika Bansod of India edged Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-17, 19-21, 21-16.
In other results yesterday, men's fifth seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark defeated Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 21-12, 9-21, 21-18 while seventh seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia edged Toma Popov Junior of France 16-21, 21-18, 22-20.
