ONE Championship’s new weigh-in rules see three bouts cancelled from Fight Night 25 card in Bangkok
Three fights have been scrapped from Saturday morning’s ONE Fight Night 25 card in Bangkok, as ONE Championship’s new weigh-in rules had an immediate – and dramatic – effect.
Amy Pirnie was first up to the scales at the host Best Western Wanda Grand Hotel for Thursday evening’s official weigh-ins and hydration tests, and had no problems passing her checks.
But the Scotswoman will no longer face Shir Cohen in an atomweight Muay Thai bout this weekend, after Cohen failed to pass hydration.
Kongthoranee Sor Sommai and Tagir Khalilov’s flyweight Muay Thai bout has also been taken off the bill at Lumpinee Stadium, after the latter failed to give a hydrated sample.
The Thai passed hydration early on but did not make weight, while Khalilov came in for the first time with just 10 minutes remaining of the official three-hour window, and failed.
Ayaka Miura – who had no issues on the scale – also saw her planned atomweight MMA bout with Jihin Radzuan fall apart, after the Malaysian narrowly failed to pass hydration – despite being on weight.
A fourth fighter – China’s Banma Duoji – also had problems, failing to make weight on Thursday.
But having given a hydrated sample, he was still able to negotiate a catchweight with opponent Danial Williams, who was hydrated and on point for their originally scheduled flyweight MMA bout. Williams, should he agree to a catchweight, will receive a percentage of Duoji’s purse.
The other seven fights on the card will go ahead as originally planned, with the fighters involved all making their contracted weights.
The Bangkok Post reported on Thursday afternoon that ONE had put in place new rules for its official weigh-ins.
Fighters who fail to give a hydrated sample within the three-hour testing window will now see their bouts cancelled. Previously, fighters were able to come back after the window to give a hydrated sample and then negotiate a catchweight with their opponents.
Under another new protocol, athletes who do not pass hydration and/or make weight within the first hour of the window will be given a 20 percent fine.
If they return to give a hydrated sample and make weight within the next two hours, the aforementioned fine will be donated to a charity of their opponent’s choosing – as was the case with Mansur Malachiev and Sanzhar Zakirov on Thursday evening.
Their respective fights against John Lineker and Hiroba Minowa will still go ahead, after they eventually returned to pass after the first hour, having failed on their first attempts.
Saturday’s card will be headlined by a lightweight kickboxing title fight rematch between Alexis Nicolas and Regian Eersel.
