Thai Olympic council presidential election on March 25
The election for a new president of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) and executive board members will take place on March 25, it was announced on Wednesday.
A search for a new leader for Thailand's sports governance is set to take place in two months' time following the departure of former deputy prime minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon as NOCT president due to his election defeat and subsequent loss of the presidency of the Thailand Aquatics Association (TAA) last November.
The date was set during an NOCT meeting presided over by Thammanoon Wanglee, the first vice president, who is serving as acting president. It was the last meeting of the current executive board members.
Lt Gen Boonchai Kasettrakarn, who defeated Gen Prawit in the TAA election, attended the executive meeting for the first time as the new president of the national aquatics governing body.
Chaiyapak Siriwat, the second vice president, said the NOCT election will be conducted by a voting body comprising 23 representatives from 37 sports associations, one representative from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), one representative from Thai Olympic athletes, and 10 qualified experts, making a total of 35 voters.
While no official candidates have been announced yet, Pimol Srivikorn, president of the Taekwondo Association of Thailand, has already declared his candidacy.
Suchai Pornchaisakudom, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, is reportedly considering a bid, while Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is also expected to enter the race as she has received widespread support.
