Thailand coach Ishii: 'We'll bring King's Cup home!'
Thailand national team coach Masatada Ishii has said the War Elephants will be gunning for the King's Cup title when the four-nation tournament gets underway in Songkhla on Friday.
The 23-member Thai squad arrived in the southern province on Monday.
Thailand are scheduled to take on the Philippines on Friday evening with Syria playing Tajikistan earlier on the same day.
Winners of the two matches will face off in the final at Tinsulanonda Stadium on Oct 11, while the two losing sides will fight it out for third place.
"Our target is to win both matches and bring the King's Cup back to Thailand," Ishii said on Monday.
"I want all the players to showcase their potential and go all out for victory.
"After our failure to qualify for the final Asian stage of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers, I want to see the players develop a better understanding of our tactics, which makes these two matches very important for us.
"This will help us develop a strong team for the future as we have drafted some new players into the squad. We have the Asean Championship coming up in December this year.
"Some of the top Thai League 1 clubs have commitments that clash with the Asean tournament, so that is why I am keen on developing a bigger pool of talented players."
Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Nualphan Lamsam said: "We have never won the King's Cup whenever it has been staged outside Bangkok. Maybe we will have more luck this time around.
"We have a good coach in Masatada Ishii and Chanathip Songkrasin is a good captain, so I expect the team to perform better in Songkhla."
